Call for entries: Emprius Prize 2024

We announce the Emprius Prize 2024 (Premi Emprius), which will award €800 to a research proposal, investigation, reflection or dissemination project related to communalism.
One of the three lines of action we have set out at Fundació Emprius is to “foster and disseminate communalist culture”.
With this prize, we will fund a piece of work or project that can contribute knowledge about communalism, or bring it closer to society and spread it.
By communalism we understand a range of forms of social organisation connected with communal and collective ownership and management of resources and communal rights over them; direct democracy and active community participation; social relations of reciprocity and mutual aid… We believe in social transformation where such structures, forms and logics carry ever greater weight, because we think they can offer solutions to many of the problems we face.
We wanted to create a competition where people with different profiles and skills could take part, not necessarily from the academic world.

Curious fact: between 1897 and 1917 the Real Academia de Ciencias Morales y Políticas held 21 competitions for essays on customary law and popular economy. In those years, there was a strong academic current interested in that topic, with landmark studies such as “Colectivismo agrario en España” and “Derecho consuetudinario y economía popular de España”, by Joaquín Costa.
