Can Gínjol

Can Gínjol is a country house in the horta of Lleida — the city’s irrigated farm belt — and the second acquisition of a rural property that Emprius has announced.

Another example of how the Foundation’s tool serves projects seeking to advance the common good, strengthen rural communities and drive social transformation, following approaches that go beyond private property.

Fundació Emprius is now the property owner, and we are working on signing a lifelong right-of-use agreement (cessió d’ús) with the steward collective that drove the project forward. The agreement will ensure the space is maintained to strengthen local community fabric and remain open to grassroots movements in the area and beyond.

More than ten people form the founding group, all with strong roots in Lleida’s social movements. Part of the group has been living on the property as tenants for five years, and the entire collective has spent over two years designing and preparing the project they can now develop.

The property includes housing. It also has half a hectare of land with olive and fruit trees, a vegetable garden, chicken coop, storage shed… There will be infrastructure ready to host groups, and this will be the main service the project offers to organisations and collectives that need it, based on mutual aid principles.

This purchase was possible chiefly thanks to the founding group, which managed to pool savings and offer several interest-free personal loans that covered much of the process. Emprius also played a part, contributing financially and carrying out the purchase.
