The Foundation

What drives us

Vision

Fundació Emprius was born with the aim of promoting a rural communal culture that sustains and dignifies present and future Life. In a context of civilisational crisis, we want to be an agent of a necessary paradigm shift, where Life is at the centre and interdependence and eco-dependence are the foundation.

Visió

What guides us

Our principles

The Foundation is guided by two great principles

Communalism

We foster forms of resource access, production and relations based on co-operation for the common good, to break with hegemonic individualistic dynamics.

Ruralism

We emphasise the needs, capacities and potential of the rural world and its natural environment, against the dominant urban-centric culture.

What inspires us

Our values

We believe that promoting communalism and ruralism is inherently linked to practising the following values:

Agroecology and food sovereignty

We see communities as integrated harmoniously into the local natural ecosystems of which they are part. Agroecology and food sovereignty are essential to drive a transition in our territories towards food and land-management models that are socially and environmentally just.

Resilience and regeneration

In the context of collapse, we want to contribute to building a network of communities, projects and people capable of adapting to different contexts and having a regenerative impact on their territory.

Radical democracy

We practise management and decision-making based on transparency and participation, including in the projects and initiatives we drive.

Feminisms

We include a feminist perspective in how we organise ourselves and relate to each other, and in the projects and initiatives we drive, placing life at the centre, including an ethic of care and an intersectional lens.

Mutual aid

We foster the exchange of knowledge, experience and resources between like-minded projects and collectives, including strengthening the existing networks that mutually enrich us.

Solidarity

Rather than creating exclusive spaces for people in these communities, we aspire to transcend those spaces and have a transformative impact on society; and to be aware of the privileges of people within them and how we address them through solidarity.

Our paradigm

The rural commons of the 21st century

What are the commons

When we speak of the commons, we mean both the resources themselves held in collective stewardship and the dynamics, relations, forms of organisation and governance established in the community that manages them.

By resources we mean fields, forests, mountains, tools, housing and infrastructure such as ponds, corrals, production workshops, etc. We work primarily in a rural environment.

Who is the community

The commons are directly linked to the community that manages them. And this community, depending on the nature and characteristics of the commons, can be different: the neighbours of a village, the inhabitants of a hamlet, a co-operative, a collective or an association.

At Emprius, we will encourage this community to be rooted in the territory where the communal resource is located and connected to its local people. Moreover, it cannot be an exclusive community, and the mechanisms for joining it must be public and transparent.
