Can Tonal de Vallbona is a community social project that started in 2014. Our aims are to explore, reflect on and spread principles and practices for building a new society based on values like co-operation and mutual aid, self-management and direct democracy, and balance with the natural world.
The project began in 2014 when several people bought a hectare of land—an old farm in a state of abandonment on the outskirts of Sant Antoni de Vilamajor, Baix Montseny. The property has now been rebuilt and has community infrastructure of all kinds: workshops, woodworking, gathering and shared kitchen space, gym, vegetable gardens, greenhouse…

The social project has two main parts:
- Vallbona Suport Mutu: a self-provisioning collective of about 70 people—members and collaborators—with different work areas including vegetables and fruit, bread, dairy, preserves, beer, child-rearing and more. Members contribute a percentage of their salary and get the products they need.
- Social space: we aim to be open to the local community and transformative projects across Catalonia and beyond. The shared space hosts events for the territory and welcomes groups and activities from others who need the space.
We manage the space and its infrastructure in the spirit of communal culture, with assemblies and spaces for community participation, open to the outside. Beyond all the internal work, the people involved also connect with the territory through the Ateneu Popular de Vilamajor, the Teix coordination space, the Sindicat de Poble de Vilamajor and other grassroots structures that want to transform the territory they inhabit, with an anti-capitalist outlook.
