“Without commons, there are no communal assets”… Become a member of Emprius!

We’re launching a communications campaign with the slogan “Without commons, there are no communal assets”, for this December.
The goal of the campaign is to recruit new members, from people who value what we do at Emprius, to keep building the foundation’s financial sustainability.
Along the way, we want to spread awareness about what communal assets are, and about the fundamental element that makes them possible: self-organised community.
The campaign will feature beautiful visual materials and some videos, created by Sarau Estudi, a communications and graphic design co-operative.

The slogan is a word-for-word quote from historian Gaspar Feliu in his book “La llarga nit feudal. Mil anys de pugna entre senyors i pagesos” (“The long feudal night: a thousand years of struggle between lords and peasants”), in the opening chapter, aptly titled “La pagesia i els béns comunals” (“The peasantry and communal assets”):
“The title – and with this I conclude these preliminary thoughts – refers to communal assets, but I believe understanding them requires us to talk not only about communal assets, but also about community practices. And something of the community itself; because, plainly, without commons there are no communal assets.”
Marc Garfella, from the forestry co-operative Bosquerols, explained at a talk at FESC 2021 on commons, forest management and the solidarity economy:
“There are no communal assets without the institution of the ‘commons’. So wherever there is a communal asset and people are not organised and grouped together to defend these shared assets, those assets will disappear.”
